The Downtown Blog
Welcome to the Neighborhood
November 29, 2013
‘Tis the season to remember your hometown shops and eateries! While out gift buying and gathering with friends remember it’s the our neighborhood downtown stores and restaurants that have unique items and atmosphere to offer. These small businesses support community events and efforts all year long. Let’s remember to support them too.
Don’t forget Small Business Saturday is November 30th and our downtown businesses have great specials on offer. Click here to see the complete list.
Be sure to stop in the two new stores that have opened downtown – Sparked and the Faded Raven Boutique have joined the neighborhood. We’ll be holding official ribbon cuttings soon but don’t wait, stop in, shop and say hi now.
The Holiday Season begins
Wednesday, November 27
Where does the time go? We just ushered out summer with the Downtown Block Party. Halloween events seemed like mere days later and now, Thanksgiving Day and the start of the holiday shopping season! (Be sure to see our sidebar post on Small Business Saturday)
What we heard…
Tuesday, November 26
The surveys are in and the Awareness Walks have been compiled. What did we hear? The DDA and Oakland County Planning revealed the results in a public meeting last week. In short, we heard that Downtown Clawson should stay small and not extend into the neighborhoods. The downtown should continue to recruit and encourage destination businesses along with a mix of businesses that serve the everyday needs of the residents. And, we should preserve and enhance the qualities that make our downtown unique.
See the full powerpoint presentation here which summarizes all the findings. The full report will take some time to prepare and we expect it to be delivered at the end of January. We’ll post the report as soon as it arrives!
A look at Historic Preservation
Thursday, November 21
A special edition of the Clawson Historical Museum newsletter is hot off the presses and curator, Melodie Nichols, has outdone herself in the fantastic edition about historic preservation. There are articles about the downtown and its buildings and history along with great stories about the neighborhoods and historic homes. She has tips on restoring your home too.
Read it now. You’ll learn and enjoy! Click here to get your copy of the newsletter.
Waiting for the Summary

Our thanks to everyone that took the time to fill out the Survey, Awareness Walk or came to share views for the future of downtown. Thanks, also, to Ron Campbell. Leigh Davis, and Alex Hritcu, from Oakland County Planning, for facilitating meetings, gathering data and preparing the summary.
Join us on Thursday, November 21st at City Hall at 7 pm to hear the summary of the information we’ve heard.
